One conversation that I do not like having…

August 2, 2007

I’m usually willing to engage in most conversations, but some conversation just makes no sense to me. One of those conversation is when someone states that public servants such as teachers, police officers and firefighters should be paid more than professional athletes.

I usually turn the channel and go about my business as its a stupid topic and has absolutely no logic behind it.

Let me say, public servants such as teachers, fire fighters, police officers and EMS all have very important jobs. Can’t take that away from any of them and they all should be paid top dollar if they can get it.

Professional athletes careers are far less important than the aforementioned. Period!

But! And that’s a big BUT! Bigger than Coco’s.
First, I think for someone to even make that statement, they have to be a sports fan to understand the stupidity they speak. They don’t have to be fanatical about sports, but they have to at-least understand what sports are about and mean to the average person.

Using the example of a high school teacher to illustrate my point. First let me say that I  am not saying that teachers don’t deserve to be paid more – not my point at all. I am of firm belief that teachers do deserve to be top dollar – to a certain extent.

Sounds kind of cruel and selfish huh? But hear me out.

Teachers salaries are usually based on the way the school district is funded by the state. Those funds come from tax payers dollars.

As a tax payer, I’m already screaming at the top of my lungs that my taxes are already high enough. So I ask myself, do I want to pay higher taxes for that school teacher to get a pay raise that’s comparable to a pro athlete.

Hell No! – not if it means me being broke. Yep I said it – no I do not want to pay higher taxes – for any reason, no reason at all. I’m already paying enough taxes as I just made a trip down to the department of revenue to pay taxes on my new car.

Do you? Are you willing to have your taxes increased for the local PD, teachers and firefighters in your community to be paid like pro athletes? I didn’t think so.

I know I am not alone when it comes to you taking money out of your pocket. Everyone shuts up when it comes time for them dig in their pocket and make their lives less comfortable.

Now should pro athletes make the monies they do? Good question, very good question.

To answer it, you will have to look at all of the Pee Wee leagues from soccer to baseball to football. We’ve all seen how parents act at those games when their kid doesn’t get enough playing time – you think they are acting that way because they want their son or daughter to be a teacher. Your a damn fool if you do.

It starts at an early age. Most mothers and fathers want their son or daughter to grow up and be the next MVP of their chosen sport. So they invest money and time in their children to accomplish this far fetched dream. It continues from the Pee Wee Leagues to the high-school level on into the collegiate level and then on to the professional level if the kid is fortunate or good enough.

This is why you see packed stadiums on game day – regardless of the level, pee wee, high-school, collegiate or pro. Ever ask yourself where all those people in the stadiums come from?

When have you ever seen a crowd of 40,000 pack a stadium for a science project or English lesson?

So the next time you hear someone talking about how teachers need to be paid more – ask them if they are willing to pay for it. Ask them if they had a choice to make between a teachers salary increasing or paying for that gymnastics class, which would they choose. Ask them if they can tell their child they can’t afford new cleats because they would like that money to go towards teachers salaries. See what they say.

Athletes salaries are only based on what people are willing to pay. If 50,000 people show up to watch a pro football game and pay $50 a ticket – then guess  what, that’s what athletes  salaries are based off. If major corporations are willing to invest millions of dollars in sporting venues – then guess what, that’s what athletes salaries are based off.

Why not ask a sports fan who is heading to the game – hey, why don’t save that $50 for a teachers salary – and see the response that you get. Ask a corporation the same thing – if a teacher can bring in 50,000 people to a single day event with a science project – then give that teacher a raise.

For many, sports is escape therapy for life’s ups and downs. It just so happens to be big money involved too. And some can’t understand that andmake awful comparisons with the salaries of public servants. It’s a comparison that can’t be made logically as your comparing a lemon to a lime.

When have you ever heard someone say – “it’s been a long day, I think I am going to grab a beer and watch that science project on ESPN tonight”? No one goes to the high-school cafeteria to grab a carton of milk to wind down after a shitty day.

Public servants know what they are getting involved with financially when they pursue that career path. Most choose those career paths not for the money, but for the duty. So no crying them a river as they are living their dream. Unfortunately, some of those careers don’t come with a fat salary attached.

On the same note, athletes do the same – however, their dream has roads paved out of gold.

Now – I will stand up and graciously give when it comes to a public servants benefits being cut. I am vehemently against that as I don’t think their benefits should be cut after its already agreed upon.

Michael Strahan looking at retiring…

July 30, 2007

Michael Strahan - NY Giants

I will say, I am a fan of Michael Strahan, although I like nothing about the New York Giants.

Strahan didn’t report for Training Camp on Friday and his agent notified the Giants that his client is mulling over retirement.

Even if he does retire, fans of his including myself will still be able to enjoy him as a commentator as he destined for a career on the set in front of a camera. And I think he will do a damn good job, he’s witty and has a flair for the camera. He may have to invest in some Visalign, but he can afford it.

Then again, his wife jean did clean his clock in a divorce settlement whcih she was awarded $15M and $18K a month in child support. Damn!

That right there would make any man want to quit his day job.

Most recognizable brand/logo in sports…

July 27, 2007

I was talking to a good buddy of mine today about marketing a brand and some how we got on the topic of the Jumpman, Michael Jordan’s brand spawned off Nike.

We were talking about how recognizable that logo/brand was globally.

So it got me to thinking about some of the most recognizable logo/brands in sports as we know it today. So I called up my best friend while he was at work – to get his take on which brand/logo is the most recognizable the world over. We’re talking globally recognized, not nationally.

So after giving him my top 10, I had him fill in the blanks as I was a few short of ten. We couldn’ for the life us figure out which of the ten was #1, but we did have a good idea as to which ones were not #1.

So I have compiled a list and dared to place them in order from 1-10 of what I perceive the most globally recognized top 10 logos/brands in the world.

Here we go:

#1 New York Yankees - Legendary the world over and worn by many who are not even fans of the team.

New York Yankees Logo

New York Yankees Logo

#2 Nike Swoosh – Classic design that has withstood the test of time.

Nike Swoosh

#3 Gatorade - You can’t go to any sporting event and not see Gatorade on the field of play.

Gatorade logo

#4 Mobil1 – Very popular in motorsports, no matter what racing series it is.

Mobil1 Logo

#5 Jumpman – Air Jordan, #23 – 22 years in the making and very popular amongst the young generation.

Jumpman Logo

#6 Good Year – Another motorsports entry which can be found in all types of motorsports. And the Goodyear Blimp in itself is a sporting icon.

Goodyear logo

#7 adidas – Simply put, Americans don’t like soccer – but soccer is a global sport and is the most played sport amongst youths today. Look at what they are wearing and its easy to see why adidas made the list.

adidas logo

#8 Michelin – Another motorsports entry known the world over.

Michelin Logo

Michelin Man logo

#9 Los Angeles Raiders – Who doesn’t know the silver and black.
Oakland Raiders

#10 NBA Logo – Although the sport is lacking in some areas, NBA Jerseys sales are still king and the NBA Logo of Jerry West can be found on all of them sold the world over.

Now I know this can be challenged as there are a lot of other brands that can be easily added without argument – but in my opinion, this is close enough to being the real deal.

Mike Nifong confesses about no credible evidence in LAX case…

July 26, 2007

Oh really!?

When this news first broke – I turned to my best friend and said, that didn’t happen like they are saying it did. Not because I am a psychic or I was physically there – but it was all wrong from the beginning.

First and foremost, rape is a brutal and hideous crime and no woman should be subjected to such an abuse that degrades them of their dignity.

But lets look at the smart facts of this case. A young woman, regardless of color goes to house that is having a party by a group of young drunken teenage boys – not because she was invited as a guest of the party. But as a stripper. That right their should have made everyone slam on the brakes and ask some really important questions.

But nope, Nifong was up for re-relection and the black community was up in arms and he had to do something – even if he knew it was wrong. So he proceeded without caution or concern. I wonder if he knew it would be him who was the guilty party.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying a stripper deserves to be interrogated – I am not saying that all. What I am saying is this – she was not above approach. Someone should have sat her down and asked her some questions.

When the details of her actions just hours before that incident started to emerge, someone should have definitely been asking questions.

Nifong allowed the black community with their protests get to him and since the truth came out – not a single leader of that black community has stepped up to the plate to do the right thing by these players, that’s apologize, Al Sharpton included.

Lots of people were jockeying to get their face on the television cameras to voice their outrage of this alleged crime and not a single one of those who went on camera for their 15 minutes of fame returned once the dust had settled.

Way to go community leaders(allegedly) – seems you all are real stand up types. Gald you fuckers don’t represent me!

You want to know the really sad part of all this – those three kids would not have gotten justice if this case didn’t go this way. If those kids had not been charged for the lack of evidence, the black community would have been out marching for sure. So sadly enough, they had to endure some hard times to get their justice.

If this story couldn’t get any sadder, the female who alledged the rape has not been charged to date. I would think a civil lawsuit against her would have been on the table – but chances are she doesn’t have anything anyways. I saw her father on television being interviewed when all this happened – in my view, he wasn’t sure if a crime occured from his demeanor – some parents know their kids. Needless to say, his daughter embarrassed him and the rest of the family for her poor choices.

When this mess finally came to an end – the same friend I told this was wrong said something that was perhaps true – “those kids got a taste of what it feels like to be black”. Perhaps he is right.

Now the Commish is getting serious with Vick…

July 24, 2007

I was beginning to think Roger Goodell didn’t have a pair with his handling of Michael Vick in comparison to what he had done with Pacman, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson.

Wrong I was.

The Commish issued Vick a letter today ordering him to stay away from Falcons training camp until the league could further investigate the claims and the strength of the case against him by the feds.

Excerpts from the letter include:

“While it is for the criminal justice system to determine your guilt or innocence, it is my responsibility as commissioner of the National Football League to determine whether your conduct, even if not criminal, nonetheless violated league policies, including the Personal Conduct Policy,”

It was also reported that the Commish said the investigation by the league would go as quickly as possible AND they would be talking with federal law enforcement agents to discuss the strength of the case.

Now I’m feeling the Commish as he has made a statement that no player is bigger than the league and nonsense will not be tolerated or acceptable in this form or any other form. I’m sure those PETA demonstrators helped prompt that letter too.

Now, I have already discussed how stupid Vick was in previous posts here at The Barbershop. And I’m wondering if I should repeat myself…

Hmmm…

I’ll keep it short.

This dumb ass has put his lottery ticket of a contract at risk because he wants to hang around a bunch of knuckle heads who puts him at risk based on their activity. Doesn’t matter if he was involved or not – in this society, your guilty by association, particularly if your rich – notice I didn’t say black. Because this is not about black or white, this is about fighting dogs and that shit is wrong, regardless of what your color is.

So now that he won’t be in training camp, I wonder if those knuckle heads are still kissing his ass and telling him he is the man. Vick seems to think that his fans will love him no matter what, he stated it. But guess what shithead, there are no fans if your sitting at home on the couch, except those knuckle heads you run with. And they ain’t hitting on shit, if they were, they would be trying to keep you away from trouble instead of involving you in the mess.

Maybe Vick can go back to that house and clean it up since he won’t be in training camp. Do some yard work , clean those blood stains off the walls inside the house, plant some grass – and not the kind you smoke. Show that federal that your trying to make a change for the better by undoing all the wrong that was going on at that house. You never know it may help. Then again it might not.

You know what else is sad, almost sadder than those dead dogs – the fact that the Falcons have a dead dog starting at quarterback named Joey Harrington heading into the season – now that’s sad. Damn Atlanta.

But you know what, keep hope alive – sorry ass Rex Grossman led the Bears to the Superbowl last season. Imagine if Joey did that with the Falcons. Vick will be up shit creek without a paddle. If that happened, still those fans will love Vick.

I’m going to say no.

And with that, its time to open up The Barbershop for the day.

Senator Byrd says Michael Vick should burn in hell…

July 23, 2007

I told you the barking just won’t stop with Vick and this dog fighting…

Senator Robert Byrd – Democrat from West Virginia took the floor of the US Senate and stated “he’s witnessed one execution but wouldn’t mind seeing another “if it involves this cruel, sadistic, cannibalistic business of training innocent, vulnerable creatures to kill.”

Referring to Michael Vick – he went on to say the following as well:

“Barbaric!,” he yelled. “Let that word resounding from hill to hill, and from mountain to mountain, and valley to valley across the broad land. Barbaric! Barbaric! May God help those poor souls who’d be so cruel. Barbaric! Hear me! Barbaric!”

If what is alleged against Vick is true – he should go to hell, right along with Senator Byrd.

I don’t know if the Senator forgot about his past – he was a recruiter for the KKK, Ku Klux Klan for those who are not familiar with that acronym, for a period of 11 years or so.

And now he wants to condemn someone for dog fighting – what the fuck is this world coming to.

You know the sad part of this moronic grand standing – the fact the people of West Virginia keeps supporting such a loser to represent them in the senate.

What types of credentials does one need to represent West Virginia? Based on the Senators resume, I would say Vick has a damn good candidate. Quarterback at Virginia Tech, not WV, but close enough, and blood sport financier – that should get him into the senate.

I guess Vick does have a career after football – maybe he can have his seat next to the good ole Senator Byrd – it will be like two peas in a pod.

See Senator, your not much better than Vick. Even if you have done some good in your time in the senate, it was worth nothing – because of your involvement with the Klan. The hatred that organization breeds and your involvement will overshadow anything and everything you’ve touched for the good.

We are a nation of forgiveness – but there are some exceptions, dog fighting is one and the other is the KKK.
